Biography:

J. Franklin Wright (born 1924 in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia) is recognized as Canada’s leading marine painter. Drawing on his upbringing, Wright mastered marine composition to create ship portraits and seascapes that explore the sparsely documented history of Canadian shipbuilding. Formally trained in design and composition, he synthesized influences from Dutch and British marine painters to develop a style characterized by precise draughtsman ship, naturalistic coloring, and depiction of vessels in bright weather to reveal every rigging and hull detail

Over a career spanning decades, his work has been exhibited internationally—at the Mystic Invitational in Connecticut, the Jacob Javits Center in New York, and esteemed London venues including the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters—and he remains the only Canadian artist included in Denys Brook-Hart’s 20th Century British Marine Painting. A member of the International Society of Marine Painters in Florida, Wright’s paintings have been reproduced as limited edition prints that frequently sell out and acclaim him as a “master of sea and sky”

In 2006, his legacy was further cemented with the inauguration of the J. Franklin Wright Art Gallery in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia, dedicated to celebrating maritime art.
